One of the fiercest battles of WW2 Saint-Petersburg (then called Leningrad) suffered a 3 years blockade and was isolated from the rest of the Soviet Union. 1,000,000 soldiers and 2,000,000 civilians has been the price to pay for victory.

Kiev, the capital of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, was captured by the Twenty-ninth Corps and the Sixth German Army on September 19, 1941.
During the attack on the city, the German army killed 350,000 Soviet soldiers and took 600,000 Soviets prisoner. More than 100,000 of the city’s Jewish population of 160,000 fled the city before the German occupation.

The former island Walcheren was an important part of the German Atlantikwall. The coastline from Vlissingen to Westkapelle dominated the entrance of the river Schelde which is entrance to the port of Antwerp in Belgium. In october 1944 the allied forces bombed dikes and dunes to inundate the island to break the German defense that made the allready liberated Antwerp useless, thus holding back the liberation of northern parts of Europe.
